It is deeply disappointing that SUHAKAM did not appear proactive in addressing the tragic case of Zara, a victim of bullying that led to her death. In such a serious matter, the public expects SUHAKAM to take an early and firm stance, rather than only issuing a statement after charges were brought forward.

Even more concerning is that the official response seemed to emphasize “non-disclosure of identity” instead of strongly highlighting the rights of the victim and her family to justice, as well as the need for systemic reforms to prevent similar cases in the future.

As the national human rights commission, SUHAKAM should be the leading voice in defending children’s rights, pushing for transparent investigations, and ensuring stronger protection mechanisms. The delayed and limited response raises questions about the commission’s effectiveness and seriousness in safeguarding the rights of Malaysians.
